Set Up a Basic Monitoring Dashboard for a Server

Business Overview:

We have a single web server that hosts our company's website. Currently, we have no monitoring in place to track its performance or health. We only find out about issues when the site goes down, which is a big problem.

The Challenge:

We have insufficient monitoring on our server. We need a basic monitoring solution to track key metrics like CPU usage, memory, disk space, and network traffic in real-time. Without this, we are flying blind and can't proactively identify or solve problems.

Expectations:

  • Set up a simple monitoring solution on our server (e.g., using Prometheus and Grafana).
  • The dashboard should display key performance metrics (CPU, RAM, disk I/O).
  • It should also be configured to alert us via email or a messaging service (e.g., Slack) if a critical threshold is met (e.g., CPU usage > 90%).
  • The solution should be easy to maintain and scale in the future.

Support:

We will provide you with SSH access to the server. Our team can also help with any questions about our specific setup and performance needs.

Delivery:

  • A working monitoring stack configured on the server.
  • The dashboard should be accessible via a web browser.
  • Alerting rules should be set up and tested.

Documentation:

A clear README.md file explaining the monitoring setup, how to access the dashboard, and how to manage the alerts.
